The Trouble with Programs that Deal with Troubled Teens

The concept of programs that are designed to deal with troubled teens is a good one, but here are some problems with some of them so you definitely have to do your homework before you commit to placing your troubled teen into one. If you don’t select the right program for your troubled teen then they can end up with more problems coming out of it then they did going into the program. 

ImageThe majority of programs for troubled teens are well ran and have an excellent track record when it comes to the success of the teens from the place they were at going in and they new outlook on life when they walk out. However headlines in the news about young teenagers who attended a boot camp because they were out of control die instead of getting better are enough to make any good parent be weary about such programs for troubled teens.

While some of these deaths at programs for troubled teens have been determined to be from natural causes most of them aren’t. Video footage showing teenagers doing work or exercise in extreme temperatures and those showing other teenagers or even staff members beating that teenagers isn’t the type of tough love troubled teenager program you want your child to be a part of.

Many argue that these incidents are isolated but if you start looking into the statistics you will find that at least 30 teenagers die each year while they are under the guidance of a program that is supposed to be assisting them. Thousands more teenagers report to their parents the abuse or neglect they experienced as part of a troubled teen program. The number of teenagers who enter programs for troubled teenagers in the United States can’t accurately be determined because of the many private programs out there.

While there are stricter guidelines for government operated programs that deal with troubled teens it is important to understand that some of these deaths and abuse reports come from them as well. Government programs are generally court ordered so the parents can really choose the facility. Private programs for troubled teens are more expensive and parents can choose which one to send their child to as an intervention.

Many of the programs that have been sited for controversial treatment options for troubled teens hold the belief that you have to break them down physically and mentally before you can build them back up again. They often scare parents into thinking that some tough circumstances while in the program will make their teenager more appreciative and understanding when they return home.

Parents are also told that their child enduring a hard day of physical work is much better than them hanging out with their friends and drinking or doing drugs. Since most parents believe the people running these programs are experts they give in to it. They are generally at the end of their rope when it comes to dealing with the situation on their own. If they feel this is the only hope for their troubled teen they are going to allow it to happen.

There are plenty of good quality programs for dealing with troubled teens out there. They offer a program that includes counseling, teaches communication, coping skills, interactions with other people, and responsibility. These types of programs have proven to be much more successful than those that impose harsh living conditions and punishments.

Many of the harsher programs that deal with troubled teens no longer get as many children set to them. Media attention surrounding trouble with these programs has encouraged parents to get more information before turning their troubled teenager over to strangers. It has also placed pressure on the government to put laws in place to protect the children in programs and those who inflict cruel punishments can find themselves in legal trouble.
